The first religious temple on the Island of Pico, built by the first settlers in 1460 and dedicated to the patron saint Saint Peter, in honor of its first parish priest, Friar Pedro Gigante, who introduced Verdelho to the island of Pico, the island's most famous white wine variety.
The Chapel, built near the place where the first settlers of the island landed, has a rectangular plan with a simple façade, and a small belfry with an arched opening to the left, was built with plastered and whitewashed stone masonry. The gable roof is covered with traditional half-cane tile and has a stone cross on top. On the right side of the hermitage there is a quadrangular tidal well.
The Saint Peter’s Chapel belonged to the Franciscan Order and is classified by the Regional Government of the Azores as a Building of Public Interest.
