In 1960, in the Largo de São Pedro, in Lajes do Pico, the Henriquino Monument was inaugurated, during the celebrations of the fifth centennial of the settlement of the Island of Pico (1460-1960), and the death of Prince Henry, the Navigator, promoter of the discovery and settlement of these islands.
The municipality of Lajes do Pico marked the celebrations with a solemn event in the vicinity of Penedo Negro, where the first settler, Fernão Álvares Evangelho, disembarked.
On the occasion of the inauguration, the speaker at the time stated: “This monument... is not just any monument to beautify the place. In its raw material it contains the patriotic feeling of all the population of Pico, honoring the memory of the Prince, whose centennial the nation enthusiastically comes to celebrate, marking the place where the first settler docked. It also pays homage to the sacrifice, bravery and heroicity of those who, in an astonishing effort, cleared the land, built houses, populated the island, and integrated it into the goods of the Kingdom of Portugal”.
