The Maré bathing area, located in the extreme south of Lajes do Pico village, in the Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species, is a natural swimming pool of excellence in terms of the quality of its waters, classified as "Gold Quality". A place where you can swim, enjoying a breathtaking view of the mountain, and Castelete, an imposing chimney of a very eroded underwater volcanic cone.
This area is undoubtedly the biggest hotspot for waders on the Island of Pico, and where other species can also be seen, such as herons, seagulls and terns. Although a visit to this area may involve some difficulty due to the sharp reeds, you will be rewarded with the possibility of observing some rare species.
