Wild Bird Observation Post of Lajes do Pico Coastal Platform

This windmill was initially built in the 1920s by Domingos de Simas Belém, who returned to the Island of Pico after emigrating to the United States of America. However, after about 30 years in activity, on a day of strong wind “the mill fell apart” (the millstone broke loose), causing the death of its owner. From then on the mill was never used again, having been abandoned, leaving only a small part of its peg. It was recovered in 2020/2021 by the Government of the Azores with the new purpose of a bird observation post.
“On the outskirts of the village, it was interesting, about half a century ago, to see the windmills of Mistério, Ladeira Nova (Biscoitos), Juncal and Terra da Forca, with sails (or rags) puffed up, and listen, nearby, the sound of a whelk, a sign to call interested people to the mill"
