In 1993 the architectural project, by architect Paulo Gouveia, was bestowed an honourable mention from the Portuguese Architects Association and the State Department for Culture – National Architecture Awards.
The museum was extended in 2008, twenty years after the first architectural project, and also carried out by architect Paulo Gouveia. In 2014 it underwent a new extension with the constuction of an auditorium, by architects Rui Pinto and Ana Robalo.
