Fort of Santa Catarina

Fort of Santa Catarina

The only example of military architecture on the Island of Pico, built in 1792, 18th century, as a precaution against invasions by Napoleon's armies. When the piracy and the invasions had finished, this Fort was no longer needed, therefore, in 1885, a lime kiln was built in this place.
The Fort of Santa Catarina is classified as a Property of Public Interest and, after a restoration intervention promoted by the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, was reclassified, and reopened on August 26th, 2006. Currently, the area includes a public garden, a viewpoint, an entertainment and outdoor shows area (amphitheater), and sanitary facilities.
