The Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences operates in the old Whale Factory – SIBIL, an industrial equipment that was dedicated to the transformation of whales (sperm whales) into oils and flour during the 20th century, from 1955 until the beginning of the 80s.
A museum of local and regional reference, the Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences is focused on the promotion of the Azorean whale culture, perpetuating the whaling memory.
When visiting the Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences, apart from the industrial equipment, that is the centerpiece of the permanent exhibition, you will also find the multimedia exhibition about the biology, and ecology of large cetaceans, "Giants of the Sea".
