Queimada Lookout Tower

Queimada Lookout Tower

The Queimada Lookout Tower, built in 1939, was used by the Armações Baleeiras das Lajes do Pico during the whaling period, having closed definitively in 1984, when the activity was forbidden. It was acquired by Espaço Talassa in 1991 for tourist and scientific purposes.
The structure of Queimada Lookout Tower, due to a dispute between neighbors, is the only one in the Azores with two stories, as the first story had it’s view of the sea blocked by trees and corn planted by the neighbour, forcing the addition of a second story for a better view.
It covers nearly 50 nautical miles from east to west, and over 20 nautical miles from north to south, within a radius of 195 degrees.
When visiting this location, you can find experienced lookout men who are looking for the giants of the sea to provide a unique experience for those who enjoy a whale watching trip.
